Mitsubishi Outlander Fuel Consumption

The figures above are the manufacturer's own homologation claims for a brand-new car, on the test cycle named in each row and for the market these cars are imported from. They are not measurements, and the cycles are not comparable with each other — a JC08 number is a laboratory procedure, not a commute. None of the cars on this page is new: every Mitsubishi Outlander listed here is 4 years or older, and the typical one is 8 years, at around 83,449 km on the clock. Tired injectors and plugs, an ageing automatic or CVT, worn suspension and soft tyres all cost fuel, and so does stop-start traffic. A car changed from standard — oversized tyres, a suspension lift, a roof rack or engine work — moves further from the figure again, in whichever direction the change pushes it. Read the table as the ceiling a well-kept example approached when it was new: for a car of this age, planning on roughly 15–25% below the claim is realistic. The same discount applies to performance — an engine with a decade and six figures of kilometres behind it does not make what it made on the day it left the factory.

What to Know About the Mitsubishi Outlander

Design and engineering

• Monocoque crossover with seven seats on the petrol versions; the PHEV is five-seat only, as the battery occupies the third-row space.
• Ground clearance is around 190 mm, which clears graded murram and farm tracks rather than rock steps.
• The PHEV is a true plug-in with twin electric motors — one per axle, so all-wheel drive is delivered electrically with no propshaft — and an engine that can also drive the wheels directly at higher speeds.
• PHEV electric range is around 50–60 km on the JC08 cycle, which covers a typical urban commute if the car is charged; without charging it runs as a petrol hybrid carrying the battery's weight.
• Petrol versions use a CVT and on-demand all-wheel drive with a lockable mode for loose surfaces.
• Third-row seating on the petrol cars is sized for occasional or child use.

The specifications above are the manufacturer's published figures for the standard build of the generation named, and they vary with grade and with wheel and tyre size. The known issues below come from recall and service-campaign records and from failure patterns documented across the trade; the parts notes describe supply in Kenya rather than anything the manufacturer publishes. Every car listed here is a used import, and modification is ordinary at both ends of that journey — suspension lifts or lowering, different wheel and tyre sizes, bull bars, roof racks, snorkels, engine and turbo work, and Japanese-market trim that never matched the international brochure. Any of those changes ground clearance, kerb weight, gearing or fuel consumption, so treat the figures as describing the model as built and check them against the actual vehicle before relying on them.

Known issues and what to check on a used Mitsubishi Outlander

• The PHEV's electric range is only available with charging access; confirm your charging situation before considering one.
• PHEV traction-battery condition is the key check, and the specialist pool for it in Kenya is small.
• CVT fluid service history on the petrol cars.
• PHEV-specific components are scarce and expensive; plan for orders and lead times.
